The oldest grand cru in Alsace On a granitic bedrock (migmatites), the soils are sandy, rich in mineral elements, shallow at the top of the hillside (400 m above sea level), deeper at the bottom (230 m). The richness and diversity of the minerals encountered (potassium, magnesium, fluorine, phosphorus) determine the finesse and multiplicity of the aromas of its wines. With its steep south-facing slopes, Schlossberg requires terraced cultivation. A very famous locality, its quality was recognised as early as the fifteenth century. It was the first terroir in Alsace to be classified as a Grand Cru by the decree of 1975. From 1928 onwards, the winegrowers of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim had recorded all the natural production constraints of this cru in a written agreement, unanimously respected, which has since been enshrined in the decrees of recognition of the grands crus. Excellent granite soil Schlossberg is an exceptional terroir for Riesling, to which it gives a very pure fruity expression, a remarkable race and finesse. Most of the Domaine's Rieslings come from Schlossberg, with the exception of the Riesling Cuve Tho, which was born in the Clos des Capucins. The Schlossberg cuves, lively and elegant, come from the upper part of the hillside, with shallow soils. The Cuve Sainte Catherine are born in its lower part, giving fuller, fatter wines. The Riesling Schlossberg Cuve Sainte Catherine and "L'Indit!", from 60-year-old vines located halfway up the hillside, illustrate all the splendour of this terroir.
